Brits heading outside western Europe 'need medical expenses...

Medical expenses travel insurance is more important for people who venture outside western Europe, according to the Association of British Insurers (ABI).

Malcolm Tarling, spokesperson for ABI, said medical expenses cover was especially important for people travelling to the USA where treatment could be expensive.

He also said the over-70s were more likely to make a claim for medical treatment.

Mr Tarling explained standard travel insurance would usually cover "falling ill and needing medical treatment, having to cancel or curtail, lost baggage and personal possessions, loss of passport" and "liability for causing injury to someone else".

This comes after Defaqto found one in seven UK tourists travel abroad without insurance.

Figures from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office show between April 2006 and March 2007, 8.304 Brits needed assistance in the US, 6,710 passports were lost in Spain and 602 tourists from the UK were hospitalised in Greece.

Meanwhile, FirstAssist Services claims an air ambulance from the east coast of America to the UK could set you back up to £45,000.
