Brits shun US for short haul holidays

British holidaymakers looking to shop online for travel insurance policies have been shunning the US and other long haul destinations this year in order to save cash, as the cost of going further afield has increased on a large scale.
An increase in fuel duties for aircraft, and poor exchange rates when travelling further has led to Brits increasingly favouring European destinations over the more glamorous resorts, according to TravelMole.
Amongst the most popular destinations in Europe was Croatia, whilst countries in Scandinavia also saw an increase in visitors. Norway jumped 11 places on popularity tables from American Express.
Recently, M&S Money found that Brits were travelling short haul for the best value city breaks this winter, as Turkey and Croatia both denied inflation to offer good deals.
American Express director Terry Perrin said: "The decline is partly due to the cost of airport tax for UK travellers when visiting the US, which can be up to 400 per cent more than if travelling in Europe."
