Checking travel insurance small print 'essential'

It is essential that people heading away on holiday later this year check the small print on their travel insurance policy, one source has advised.

After the Department for Transport advised holidaymakers to scrutinise their policies, aviation minister Theresa Villiers said that doing so will help to prevent the chaos which ensued when the Icelandic volcano erupted earlier this year.

She pointed out that people need to check whether they are covered for any eventuality and see how much they stand to gain or lose in the event of a disaster.

Ms Villiers explained: "Today's holiday market works in such a variety of ways, it can be very difficult to know whether and how your trip might be covered."

Frank Barrett, travel editor of the Daily Mail, said there are many cases where people have been forced to cancel a holiday at short notice due to health reasons and not been recompensed, but this is generally their own fault.
