'Crazy' to travel without insurance

People who take their holidays without travel insurance are making a mistake, according to an expert.

John Boyles, account manager at Endsleigh Insurance, suggested travellers may be complacent over the issue due the UK reliance on the NHS and the belief other countries will also provide health care.

Describing the product as "vital", he said: "If you travel abroad without insurance then in my opinion you must be crazy.

"The costs can be enormous and nobody is exempt or immune from something untoward happening to them."

Mr Boyles also recommended travel insurance on all forms of trip, saying it is equally important for short journeys, European breaks and worldwide adventures.

Research from American Express discovered 24 per cent of people intend to go on holiday without purchasing travel insurance.

However, figures from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office reveal a week in a Greek hospital can cost £5,000, while a broken leg in America costs an average of £24,000 to treat.
