Ensure travel insurance covers winter sports

Many people who travel abroad this year to indulge themselves with a bit of festive skiing, will not be aware that they may need to buy extra coverage to ensure that their medical bills will be covered in the event of an injury on the slopes.

New research from Defaqto has discovered that numerous single trip travel insurance policies do not offer winter sports cover as part of their package.

The research discovered that 13 per cent of all policies offer no cover at all for winter sports, whilst those that do vary greatly on the amounts they will cover, both for closure of slopes and the loss of expensive equipment.

Recently, those who are frequent skiers were warned that many annual travel insurance policies would only cover them for a set number of days skiing per year.

Mike Powell, Defaqto's insight analyst for general insurance, said: "We have found wide-ranging variation across single trip travel insurance policies in terms of the winter sports-related cover they offer."
