Failing to take out travel insurance 'is reckless'

People who venture on holiday without taking out travel insurance are acting "recklessly", according to one commentator.

Frank Barrett, travel editor of the Daily Mail, said there are many cases where people have been forced to cancel a holiday at short notice due to health reasons and not been recompensed, but this is generally their own fault.

He pointed out that people should always make sure that they have travel cover in place for any such eventuality – something highlighted earlier this year by the huge disruption caused by the Icelandic volcano.

"When it comes to holidays and travel, things can and do go wrong - ask the customers recently failed travel companies. Failing to take out adequate travel insurance is an act of reckless stupidity," Mr Barrett noted.

Older people should not take a holiday outside of the UK without first buying travel insurance, a spokesman for Confused.com recently suggested.
