Tourists should check that their travel insurance policy covers them against acts of terrorism, a research company has recommended.

According to Defaqto, analysis of the annual and single travel insurance market suggests most providers would pay for medical expenses from claims over terrorism.

However, the research also claims some travellers could lose out on baggage and personal accident claims.

Mike Powell, consultant for general insurance at Defaqto, revealed that just 63 per cent of travel insurance policies analysed offer protection from terrorist incident and claimed a "significant proportion" of people could have inadequate cover.

He added: "Terrorism is not always a consideration that you would even think about when purchasing your travel insurance cover, but you should check with your insurer to confirm the cover provided."

According to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, travellers can minimise the risk of terrorism by regularly checking its website for advice, register with the local British Embassy or Consulate upon arrival and being more vigilant when in places which attract foreigners, such as hotels and bars.
