Older holidaymakers 'should not neglect travel insurance'

Older people should take a holiday outside of the UK without first buying travel insurance, Confused.com has suggested.

The price comparison website pointed out a one-week single trip policy for Europe costs an 18 to 54-year-old £5.81, but will set back a 65 to 74-year-old £17.98 - three times more.

However, the report noted that the reason older people face higher travel insurance costs is because people over the age of 65 are three times more likely to make a claim.

The research also pointed out that there is a range of ways older people can reduce the cost of cover, such as by finding a specialist product or shopping around for the best deal.

Steve Williams, head of travel insurance at Confused.com, said: "There are a number of specialist travel insurance policies available for older people, so this group of travellers shouldn't be tempted to take the risk of travelling without cover."

Recently, the Identity and Passport Service warned holidaymakers of all ages to ensure they keep their passport in a safe location both at home and when abroad.
