Research from American Express which has revealed one in six holidaymakers had items stolen while abroad highlights the importance of travel insurance.
Kirstie Bayley from American Express said: "A theft or break-in can ruin the perfect holiday. The last thing people want when they are on holiday is to worry about the safety of their money and belongings."
Acting on these figures, the credit card company has compiled some tips to help Brits avoid becoming a victim of theft while on holiday.
It advises people to make photocopies of all important documentation, including passport details, hotel reservation confirmation and flight tickets.
Travellers are advised to leave one set at home and take one with them, remembering to keep it separate from the genuine article.
People are also advised to email themselves any information that may be required in case of an emergency such as insurance details and emergency numbers for lost or stolen cards.
Earlier this month, the Association of British Travel Agents said people are reluctant to sacrifice their annual summer holiday despite the current economic gloom.
