Passport security 'essential for travellers'

UK holidaymakers have been advised by the government to make sure they keep their passports in a safe and secure location when abroad.
The latest figures published by the Identity and Passport Service (IPS) revealed that more than 60,000 people reported their passports as lost or stolen when they were overseas between April 2009 and March 2010.
However, the research also showed that 83 per cent of travellers claim they store their passport in a safe place.
The organisation recommended that travellers always take two photocopies of their passport with them and store them in different locations to the original.
In addition, a lost or stolen passport should be reported to the relevant authorities as soon as possible.
IPS chief executive Sarah Rapson commented: "It is vital that people take care of their passports, both at home and abroad. Passports are increasingly attractive documents to organised criminals."
Recent research by insolvency trade body R3 found that more than 2.3 million holidaymakers have borrowed an average of £1,130 to fund their trip this summer.
