Precautions 'essential for travel'

Holidaymakers need to have more awareness of the need for vaccinations when they go overseas, it has been suggested.

Recent research from Post Office Travel Insurance revealed that 44 per cent of people do not look into whether they need vaccinations or medicines when they go on holiday.

In addition, 56 per cent failed to identify countries where it is recommended they have medicines and vaccines before setting off.

Rachel Croft, head of Post Office Travel Insurance, said that travel agents could do more to inform people of the need for preventative measures when they buy their holidays.

"Most travel insurance policies do say in their documentation to make sure you read the advice given to you on that country before travelling," she added.

In addition, Ms Croft said that people could find that their insurance provider refuses to honour a claim if it emerges that they neglected to use precautions such as anti-malaria tablets.
