School break 'causes holiday price hike'

Travel insurance customers have been reminded that the cost of vacations can rocket during the school holidays.
Research carried out by Santander Cards found that the prices charged by overseas resorts rise by an average of 38 per cent between mid-July and mid-August - with Portugal being the worst offender with a 85 per cent hike.
In addition, UK resorts tend to charge 30 per cent more when children are off school.
Emma Roberts, director of Santander Cards, commented: "Massively inflated premiums are an unfortunate inevitability for families going away during the school summer holidays."
She added that families should look at ways to lower the cost of their summer holidays, such as using a card which does not charge for foreign currency transactions.
Last week, the European Commission highlighted the importance of people carrying a European Health Insurance Card when they are taking a break on the continent, as this will allow them to access healthcare services should they suffer illness or an accident.
