Travel insurance customers saving cash on self-made holidays

Many Brits opted for a self-made holiday last year, rather than a package deal, saving them £4.92 billion.
Research from Santander showed that almost half of the people who jetted away last year booked their travel and accommodation separately, by going online or calling directly.
The travel insurance customers who opted to avoid travel agents or tour operators estimated that they saved £423 each, while around a quarter thought that they had saved £500 or more.
Emma Roberts, director of Santander Cards, said: "It's not surprising that in the current economic climate, holidaymakers are increasingly looking for value and are prepared to do the homework themselves in order to get the best deal."
The research also showed that Brits are getting bolder when heading abroad, with six million asking for an upgrade on either their flight or their hotel room.
Travel insurance customers wanting to save cash may be advised to avoid skiing in Courchevel after research from Confused.com found that the resort is the most expensive in France.
