Travel insurance 'essential for gap year trips'

Students have to ensure they have taken out adequate travel insurance before they embark on their gap year adventures, it has been suggested.

Research published by price comparison service moneysupermarket.com found that students can obtain travel insurance without damaging their tightly-budgeted finances.

The organisation pointed out that the best deal on the market is offered by Infinity, which covers activities such as mountaineering, parachuting and scuba diving at a cost of just £110.

Bob Atkinson, travel expert at moneysupermarket.com, said: "Heading abroad on a gap year is a very exciting time for many travellers, however it is important to ensure you are fully prepared before you go."

Mr Atkinson recommended that gap year students purchase their travel insurance when they book their break and advised them to ensure the policy covers all the activities they think they will enjoy on the trip.

Last month, Moneyfacts.co.uk said that students need to find the best bank account before they attend university, adding that ones with interest-free overdrafts are often best for their needs.
