Travel insurance 'important for early bookings'

More than one million people could be neglecting to take out travel insurance when they book their holiday, it has been suggested.

Research carried out by Sainsbury's Travel Insurance claimed that 1.14 million early bookers do not intend to take out any cover, which could mean they lose out if ill health prevents them from taking their trip.

Joanne Mallon, travel insurance manager at Sainsbury's Finance, recommended that anyone who plans to go on holiday outside of the UK ensures they have an adequate level of cover.

"Cover that will provide assistance when abroad and for cancellations should you fall ill before your trip, for example, really is as essential as your passport," she commented.

The expert also recommended that holidaymakers shop around for travel insurance in order for them to benefit from the best deals on the market, while greater savings can be made by purchasing an annual policy to cover a number of trips.

Recent research carried out by More Than Travel Insurance found that 31 per cent of skiers erroneously believe that their policy will remain valid if they cause an accident on the slopes while under the influence of alcohol.
