Travel insurance is "the wisest purchase you can make" before heading off on an adventure holiday or gap year, according to a travel expert.
A spokesperson for STA Travel said that travel insurance is invaluable to travellers who lose belongings or require medical attention while away.
She also stated: "You should ensure the travel insurance you take out covers all the countries you plan to travel to and any activities you plan to participate in."
A recent report from Defaqto found that one in seven travellers still go abroad without any travel insurance, despite the fact that most policies have never been cheaper.
According to STA Travel, their top five adventure holidays last year were rafting the Grand Canyon, reaching Everest base camp, tracking mountain gorillas in Uganda, trekking the Inca Trail and taking the Trans-Mongolia Express.
