Travel insurance 'needed for extreme sports'

Sports fans who are inspired to try extreme activities by the upcoming Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics should ensure they are covered against accidents.
A report from esure travel insurance claimed that many people could consider taking part in an adventurous sport while on holiday and found that 34 per cent would do so without checking they are insured.
The group pointed out that low-risk sports, such as curling or ice skating, tend to be covered as standard on many travel policies, but other activities like ski jumping, bobsleighing, ski acrobatics and luging are often excluded.
Mike Pickard, head of travel insurance at esure, said: "Interest in the Olympic Winter Games is likely to spark an increase in the take-up of more extreme winter sports by Brits abroad. If you are tempted to try something new it's crucial to have quality travel insurance."
Bob Atkinson, travel expert at moneysupermarket.com, recently stressed the importance of taking out insurance when heading for a family skiing break during the upcoming half-term holiday.
