Travel insurance 'needed for winter breaks'

People heading on ski or snowboard holidays before Christmas should make sure they have adequate travel insurance, it has been suggested.

The AA said that it is worried more winter sports enthusiasts going on a pre-Christmas break will attempt to save money by cutting back on cover.

However, Christian Young, director of AA Travel Insurance, highlighted Foreign & Commonwealth Office statistics which claimed that 31 per cent of people go on overseas sporting holidays without insurance.

In addition, he claimed that crowded slopes mean people are more likely to engage in risky behaviour in a bid to find peace and quiet.

"Overcrowding is … tempting people to take risks - such as skiing off-piste, away from the throng, without a guide which obviously can be dangerous," he explained.

Last month, Carl Christopher, spokesperson for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, said that advance planning and travel insurance are important for anyone thinking of skiing on holiday.
