Travel insurance 'protects against the unexpected'

The main reason for taking out travel insurance is to protect against the unforeseen, an expert has said.
Following events at Heathrow Airport's new Terminal 5, where many travellers experienced problems with their baggage being delayed, a spokesperson for the Association of British Insurers (ABI) pointed out that as the problems were known about, they may not be covered.
"Travel insurance is designed primarily to protect you against the unforeseen and unexpected risk," said Malcolm Tarling, a spokesperson for the ABI.
He said that policies were designed to be taken out on the basis that they would cover events that were not planned for.
In relation to the events at Terminal 5, Mr Tarling noted that some insurers said they would not cover baggage because the problems were known to people. Insurance covers events that are not known about, he said.
Last year, the British Insurance Brokers' Association noted that many travel insurance policies do not cover items while they are checked into the cargo hold on a plane.
