Travel insurance 'unlikely to cover drunken accidents'

Holidaymakers who have been in an accident as a result of drinking alcohol are unlikely to secure a payout on their travel insurance, the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) has warned.

Frances Tuke, spokesperson for ABTA, said: "Most insurance policies are not valid if the cause of an accident is because of drinking."

She added it was important that British tourists were aware of the conditions outlined in their insurance policy.

Commenting on whether tourists from the UK are treated differently because of their reputation for behaving badly when drunk, Ms Tuke admitted some destinations were taking a "more zero tolerance" approach to binge-drinking.

British diplomats and officials are meeting this summer to discuss what to do about the heavy drinking and bad behaviour of Brits on holiday on the Greek island of Zante.

In a survey by Expedier, hoteliers said Brits were the worst tippers, the most badly behaved and one of the top three complainers.
