Travellers 'want unique yet cheap breaks'

Customers are looking for a holiday experience which is unique while being cost-effective, travel insurance customers have heard.

Jonathan Cudworth, director of product management for Expedia.co.uk, said that success of firms such as Thomas Cook and TUI shows that traditional package holidays are still popular with many tourists.

However, the expert claimed that package breaks are becoming "less relevant" to the travel market, as the British holidaymaker is becoming more independent.

"Customers are increasingly purchasing travel components from multiple suppliers in the search for a travel experience that is both unique; and in many cases, cheaper," he explained.

Mr Cudworth also pointed out that the benefits of this approach include a wider choice of hotels and flights, as well as more flexibility over the duration of the break.

Recently, ABTA - The Travel Association predicted that up to 2.8 million people could go away over the Christmas and new year period, with many of these holidays being in countries outside of the eurozone.
