World Cup holidays 'need travel insurance'

Football lovers heading to South Africa to catch the World Cup action should not neglect their travel insurance.

Bob Atkinson, travel expert at moneysupermarket.com, recommended that people take out a policy as soon as the plans for their trip are confirmed, as this will ensure they are covered should any problems arise.

"Travel insurance is vital for claiming for cancellations, lost cash or thefts and providing emergency medical treatment," he commented.

Mr Atkinson also pointed out that policies often vary and may have exclusions for what can be claimed for, making it important for people to carefully read the small print of their cover.

The expert added that travellers should keep a copy of their policy and emergency phone numbers with them at all times in South Africa, so they can deal with any emergencies promptly.

Sainsbury's Travel Money recently found that most people travelling to South Africa for the World Cup do not know they can only take a maximum of 5,000 rand (£445) into or out of the country.
